Prague - The Vltava (Moldau) River in the Czech capital of Prague reached the second flood degree in early morning hours and the third degree, the state of danger, is expected around noon, therefore barriers are being built in the city, acting mayor Tomas Hudecek told CTK today.
Since the night firefighters have been building anti-flood barriers in the districts of Radotin, later also in Liben, Zbraslav, Modrany and Kampa in the historical centre.
Protective walls were also built in some underpasses and in the Stromovka park over the swollen river.
"The situation is very serious as 700 cubic metres of water flows in the Vltava River per second. The flow is likely to rise to 1100 around noon," Hudecek said.
The cascade of dams on the Vltava River has so far regulated its flow in the capital.
The first flood degree was declared in Prague on Friday when the gates on the little Certovka River in the centre were locked. The riversides were closed to the public and then they were partially inundated.
The water level in other rivers in the Czech Republic has been rising, too, due to heavy rains in the past days.
The flood danger was declared in several regions in west and north Bohemian on Saturday. In small hours, it was also declared in the Central and South Bohemian regions.
Prague experienced the most disastrous flooding in history in August 2002. It afflicted over one-third of the country, mainly south, central and north Bohemia, including the capital. Over 800 municipalities in ten regions out of 14 were inundated and 17 people died in the floods.
The flooding also partially damaged half of 51 metro stations in Prague, while 17 of them were submerged. The total damage was put at 73 billion crowns, 27 billion of which in Prague only.
