Two senators say the NSA is still lying to Congress
Two Democrats on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence say the National Security Agency provided “inaccurate” and “misleading” information to the American public about the government’s vast surveillance operations.
Senators Ron Wyden and Mark Udall sent a letter to NSA Director Gen. Keith Alexander on Monday asking him to make revisions to a set of fact sheets that were released by his agency to quell concerns about domestic surveillance in the wake of leaked documents attributed to former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden earlier this month.
The Guardian newspaper has been publishing top-secret documents provided by Snowden that he says proves the NSA operates secretive spying programs that retain information on United States citizens under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) and Section 215 of the PATRIOT Act. Snowden claims those two statutes are abused in order to surveil American citizens, an argument Gen. Alexander’s office recently attempted to counter by releasing a four-page set of bullet points outlining what the US government can and can’t do under federal law.
According to Sens. Wyden and Udall, the NSA’s response isn’t in-tune with what they’ve been told of the programs. "We were disappointed to see that this fact sheet contains an inaccurate statement about how the Section 702 authority has been interpreted by the US government," they write Gen. Alexander. "In our judgment this inaccuracy is significant, as it portrays protections for Americans' privacy as being significantly stronger than they actually are."
But while the fact sheets have been made available online, Wyden and Udall can’t explain in their public letter what their allegations are in reference to since the lawmakers’ own knowledge of the clandestine operations are not allowed to be discussed, even among the constituents who elected them to the Senate. Instead, they wrote that they’ve “identified this inaccurate statement in the classified attachment” sent to Alexander.
Elsewhere, the lawmakers rejected the NSA’s claim that, "Any inadvertently acquired communication of or concerning a US person must be promptly destroyed if it is neither relevant to the authorized purpose nor evidence of a crime."
"We believe that this statement is somewhat misleading,” replied the senators, “in that it implies that the NSA has the ability to determine how many American communications it has collected under Section 702, or that the law does not allow the NSA to deliberately search for the records of particular Americans. In fact, the intelligence community has told us repeatedly that it is ‘not reasonably possible to identify the number of people located in the United States whose communications may have been reviewed under the authority’ of the FISA Amendments Act.”

Dazu muss man wissen, dass Greenwald mutmaßlich enge Beziehungen zu Snowden pflegt: Der in Rio de Janeiro lebende Journalist hatte vor rund einem Monat das Interview geführt, in dem Snowden die riesigen Überwachungsprogramme der USA enthüllte. Damit brachte er den Ausspäh- und Datenskandal ins Rollen.
Snowden znovu požádá o azyl v Rusku

Bývalý zaměstnanec amerických tajných služeb Edward Snowden (30) se chystá znovu žádat o politický azyl v Rusku, než mu okolnosti dovolí odletět do Latinské Ameriky.
Uvedli to ruští ochránci lidských práv, s nimiž se včera setkal na letišti Šeremetěvo.
„Požádal o pomoc se získáním útočiště v Rusku, než bude moci odletět do Latinské Ameriky,“ uvedla podle agentury Interfax Taťjana Lokšinová z moskevské kanceláře Human Rights Watch.
„Nic z toho, co jsem podnikl či se chystám podniknout, nedělám proto, abych uškodil USA. Chci, aby Amerika vzkvétala,“ měl na schůzce v tranzitním prostoru letiště prohlásit Snowden podle serveru newsru.com.
Média neměla žádný přístup
Setkání se odehrálo za zavřenými dveřmi a množství novinářů nemělo možnost se s ním setkat. Snowden prý poděkoval Rusku, Venezuele, Bolívii, Nikaragui a Ekvádoru za to, že zareagovaly na jeho předchozí žádosti o azyl. Schůzky se zúčastnilo 13 lidí, včetně ruského ombudsmana Vladimira Lukina, poslance Vjačeslava Nikonova, dvou známých advokátů.
„Budeme nadále tlačit na vlády, aby bylo zaručeno jeho nezadatelné právo žádat o azyl kdekoli se rozhodne,“ prohlásil Sergej Nikitin, šéf moskevské odbočky Amnesty International. „To, co zveřejnil, je očividně ve veřejném zájmu a jeho činy byly odůvodněné,“ dodal. Úřady USA usilují o Snowdenovo vydání, aby jej mohly soudit za vyzrazení tajných programů sledování internetové a telefonické komunikace v globálním měřítku.
Američan už jednou podal žádost o azyl v Rusku, ale stáhl ji poté, co se dozvěděl, že podle prezidenta Vladimira Putina by musel ukončit další zveřejňování tajných vládních dokumentů.
Kreml podle Putinova mluvčího Dmitrije Peskova ještě Snowdenovu novou žádost o azyl neobdržel, stále ale podle něj platí předchozí podmínka. Tedy že by musel přestat s činností poškozující USA.
Poplach kolem linky do Havany
Washington zrušil platnost Snowdenova cestovního pasu, když 23. června prchl z Hongkongu do Moskvy, odkud kvůli tomu zřejmě nemůže odletět. Ve čtvrtek se opět vyrojily spekulace, že už přesto odcestoval letadlem společnosti Aeroflot do Havany. Linkový spoj se totiž vyhnul vzdušnému prostoru USA. Místo severní trasou přes Skandinávii, Grónsko, Kanadu a pak na jih přelétl západní Evropu, a zamířil na Kubu přímo přes Atlantický oceán.
Člen ruské posádky nicméně po příletu do Havany řekl reportérům, že Američan na palubě nebyl. Mluvčí Aeroflotu uvedl, že změnu trasy způsobilo buď počasí, nebo zpoždění letu už v Moskvě. Letadlo však odstartovalo jen s pětiminutovým časovým mankem.
Server specializovaný na sledování letového provozu TurbulenceForecast. com potvrdil, že v oblasti Islandu a Grónska byla brázda vysokého tlaku, jež vyvolávala prudké turbulence.

Whistleblower Edward Snowden besitzt noch viel mehr brisantes Material, als er bisher preisgegeben hat - das berichtet "Guardian"-Journalist Glenn Greenwald im Interview mit einer argentinischen Zeitung. Tausende Dokumente habe Snowden auf verschiedene Orte verteilt.
Buenos Aires - "Snowden besitzt genügend Informationen, um der US-Regierung innerhalb einer Minute mehr Schaden zuzufügen, als es jede andere Person in der Geschichte der USA jemals getan hat" - diese drastischen Worte wählte "Guardian"-Journalist Glenn Greenwald in einem Interview mit der argentinischen Zeitung "La Nación". Snowden verfüge danach über weit mehr brisantes Material, als er bisher preisgegeben hat.
Der US-Regierung zu schaden, sei allerdings nicht Snowdens Anliegen, sagte Greenwald - und untermauerte diese Ansicht noch einmal in einem Blog-Eintrag. Der Whistleblower wolle das besagte Material gar nicht veröffentlichen. "Sein Ziel ist es, die Informationsprogramme aufzudecken, die von Menschen auf der ganzen Welt genutzt werden, ohne zu wissen, dass sie sich damit entblößen und ohne dass sie bewusst zugestimmt haben, ihr Recht auf Privatsphäre aufzugeben."
"Schlimmster Alptraum" der USA
Snowden besitzt laut Greenwald eine gewaltige Menge an Dokumenten. Tausende davon habe er auf verschiedene Orte verteilt und so "sichergestellt, dass mehrere Personen weltweit sein Archiv komplett haben". Das sei eine Lebensversicherung für den Whistleblower. Sollte ihm etwas zustoßen, würden diese Dokumente veröffentlicht. Für die Vereinigten Staaten wäre dies nach Einschätzung von Greenwald "ihr schlimmster Alptraum".
